The overall aim of the SABC study is to advance the prevention and management of breast cancer in black women in South Africa through a better understanding of the molecular, pathological, and risk factor patterns.

The specific objectives are:

  1. To set up a large population-based case—control study of breast cancer at the public Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in Soweto, South Africa

  2. To assess the association of excess body weight, physical activity, and dietary intake with breast cancer in South African black women

  3. To investigate whether these associations differ by menopausal status and receptor status or differ from established associations in Caucasian women

  4. To provide information to develop preventive programmes to decrease breast cancer risk in the black South African population
