Objectives
The overall aim of the SABC study is to advance the prevention and management of breast cancer in black women in South Africa through a better understanding of the molecular, pathological, and risk factor patterns.
The specific objectives are:
- To set up a large population-based case—control study of breast cancer at the public Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in Soweto, South Africa
- To assess the association of excess body weight, physical activity, and dietary intake with breast cancer in South African black women
- To investigate whether these associations differ by menopausal status and receptor status or differ from established associations in Caucasian women
- To provide information to develop preventive programmes to decrease breast cancer risk in the black South African population
